As Alumni weekend was this last weekend, I thought it appropriate to write a post on what Georgetown University has meant to me, my family and Martin’s Tavern. Almost 100 years ago, Billy Martin II, My Grandfather, attended Georgetown University and played Basketball for the 1913 Men’s Varsity team. He loved Georgetown and he was passionate about his time there.

He went on to be a professional athlete as well as a businessman but most importantly he was a man of principal and knowledge, attributes that were fostered and nurtured at Georgetown. Many stories have been passed down to us over the years of his accomplishments but we are most proud of the restaurant that stands bearing his name, Martin’s Tavern. Over the years his tavern has offered refuge for those needing a moment to rest and food to those needing to address their hunger. It has been a place where history was gently guided by the conversations and deliberations of those sitting in the booths drinking their whiskey or scotch. A place where a student could sit and read up on Baker’s chemistry assignments before the next exam. A place where time stands still yet history is made. It stands as a monument to everything we are.
For all of the years that Martin’s has quietly stood, it has represented the dream of a Georgetown University graduate and served those in the community and especially the Georgetown University family with pride and honor.
Welcome Back Georgetown Alumni and welcome home to Martin’s Tavern.
Sincerely
Billy Martin IV
