Martins Tavern

It's Been So Long Since Last We Met

Hello Everyone!

I know that it has been a little while since my last blog update but just wanted to let you know it's because we have been working so hard here at the Tavern.

First, I want to let each of you know how much my staff, family and I appreciate all of the well-wishes you have sent our way since the passing of Eliester Pineda. Your warm words, prayers and donations have done more than you can ever know.  He was a very special young man and will forever be missed.

I also want to thank all of you that joined us for Saint Patrick's Day!  I'm sorry that I couldn't join you for all the fun and Guinness but Mother Nature thought it best that I spent the day on the couch recovering from the flu.  Next year...

There are some exciting changes happening here at Martin's Tavern  I would like to take this time to officially welcome our new General Manager, Ms. Mayu Horie  We are lucky to have her and her energy here with us.  If you haven't met her, stop on by and say hello!

We are also working on reworking our menu to include some more of your favorite traditional Irish dishes.  We will be letting you know on our website as well as through Facebook and Twitter when the new menu will arrive.  So go and 'Like' us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter @MartinsTavernDC.

All the best,

Billy Martin IV

Welcome Home Georgetown Alumni

As Alumni weekend was this last weekend, I thought it appropriate to write a post on what Georgetown University has meant to me, my family and Martin’s Tavern. Almost 100 years ago, Billy Martin II, My Grandfather, attended Georgetown University and played Basketball for the 1913 Men’s Varsity team. He loved Georgetown and he was passionate about his time there.

Billy Martin sits second from roght in the second row.

He went on to be a professional athlete as well as a businessman but most importantly he was a man of principal and knowledge, attributes that were fostered and nurtured at Georgetown. Many stories have been passed down to us over the years of his accomplishments but we are most proud of the restaurant that stands bearing his name, Martin’s Tavern. Over the years his tavern has offered refuge for those needing a moment to rest and food to those needing to address their hunger. It has been a place where history was gently guided by the conversations and deliberations of those sitting in the booths drinking their whiskey or scotch. A place where a student could sit and read up on Baker’s chemistry assignments before the next exam. A place where time stands still yet history is made. It stands as a monument to everything we are.
For all of the years that Martin’s has quietly stood, it has represented the dream of a Georgetown University graduate and served those in the community and especially the Georgetown University family with pride and honor.
Welcome Back Georgetown Alumni and welcome home to Martin’s Tavern.

Sincerely
Billy Martin IV

Happy New Year

I want to wish a Happy New Year to everyone! The whole week leading up to New Years was fantastic! For all whom celebrated New Years Eve and the count down with us, you could not have asked for a better way to roll in the New Year! Mark your calendars now for next year to celebrate with great food and a fun time at Martin’s. So now that 2010 is here, this is what you will have to look forward to in the coming months at Martin's Tavern. First, now that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is over there is no better place than Martin’s Tavern to lift the winter doldrums. With grey days and really cold temperatures come in and enjoy the cozy atmosphere and warm yourself with some comfort food and warm drinks.

February is just around the corner and that means Valentine’s Day will be upon us before we know it. Make Martin’s your destination spot with that special someone. It has to be romantic if President Kennedy proposed to Jackie here. The next month being March will bring with it St. Patrick’s day! Another great day with special Irish foods and drinks that you won’t want to miss! I will have more details on these special days in my up coming Blogs. I will also have pictures for all to see from the holiday season. Till then take care and I look forward to seeing all of you soon!

Happy Holidays

Holidays at Martin's Tavern

Can you believe 2009 is almost over? This means now is the best time to thank all of you -- customers, employees and family, for this past year. While the year(s) have been difficult for many of our friends, with the economy leaving some out of work and others cautious about the coming months and New Year, you have always found the strength to carry on and set your sights on the future with all of the hope that it brings. Our goal and commitment is to make Martin’s Tavern your home away from home regardless of the climate. No matter whether you stop in every day or if you are planning on coming by for your first time or somewhere in between, there is always someone to welcome you into our historic Tavern.  For 75 years, the Martin family has been at the corner of Wisconsin and N Street, the corner stone, proudly serving our Georgetown community & the greater Washington Metropolitan area and the hundreds of thousands of visitors who want to stop in for a great meal and share in the history that we have experienced within our establishment. It is with great pride that we now look towards 2010 and hope that you stop in and raise your glass (and fork) with us over the holidays.

MARTIN’S TAVERN IS OPEN DAY AND NIGHT! If you have any questions about our operating hours or if you wish to make a reservation, I recommend that you call us at 202-333-7370. Reservations can be made at martins-tavern.com and also has answers to most of your questions too. For Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, and New Year’s Day please make your reservations well in advance so we can make sure that we have a table waiting for you!

If you are thinking of celebrating this holiday season, Martin’s Tavern is in full holiday swing. Our holiday decorations are not to be missed! We will be open every day except Christmas Day.

Finally and especially in regards to my absence over the past several months,  I’d like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to every one of my employees and management team for putting their hearts, souls and pride into providing another great year of service and commitment. I couldn’t ask for anymore or a better staff and…I couldn’t do it without you! Martin’s Tavern continually strives to exceed our patrons expectations and we ask that you let us know how we can serve you better. Feel free to speak to a manager or contact us online at [email protected]. If you would like to share your dining experience please share it with others via our yelp page.
Sincerely,
Billy Martin
